Nelson's Dockyard is the working heart of Antigua & Barbuda's UNESCO World Heritage Site — an eighteenth-century Georgian naval dockyard in continuous use, and the country's primary heritage tourism destination. Its tourist gift shop occupies a historic dockyard building, serving the volume of visitors who move through the site daily.
FRagments Architecture was engaged directly by the National Parks Authority as Lead Architect for the shop's renovation. The existing interior had grown dense and cluttered over time — fixtures competing with each other, merchandise difficult to browse, circulation tight. The brief was a simple, effective uplift: let the goods and the historic shell both read clearly.
The renovation didn't add square footage or reinvent the building — it simplified what was already there. A single central island counter replaced a scatter of freestanding fixtures, giving the room one clear circulation path instead of several competing ones. Wall shelving was rebuilt flush and consistent, so the goods read as a collection rather than a jumble.
Lighting did the rest of the work. Improved fixtures throughout the room let the historic timber ceiling and shuttered windows stay legible, while giving the merchandise itself proper light to be seen and appreciated — the simplest, most effective move available inside a historic shell that couldn't be altered structurally.
Completed in 2024, the renovation returned a much-used building to daily service with a clearer, calmer interior — better circulation, better lighting, and merchandise that visitors can actually see and appreciate. It's a smaller commission than the studio's flagship heritage work, handled with the same standard.
Together with the Interpretation Centre Gift Shop at Dow's Hill, it positions FRagments Architecture as the practice National Parks Authority turns to for retail and interior work inside Antigua's UNESCO World Heritage Site.
